Death on Roads

About 1.16 million people die in road crashes every year, and 20 to 50 million more are injured. Road crashes are the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5 to 29.

  • 92% of road deaths happen in low- and middle-income countries, which have only about 60% of the world’s vehicles.
  • More than half of the people killed are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
  • Crashes cost most countries about 3% of their GDP.
  • The United Nations has set a goal to halve road deaths and injuries by 2030.

Most crashes are preventable

The NSC Defensive Driving Course trains drivers to recognise a hazard, understand the defence and act correctly in time. Be Safe is an NSC-approved training centre, offering the course to company teams and as a self-paced online course.
